Dune part three (3) updates
Dune: Part Two helmer Denis Villeneuve expresses his excitement as he continues to work on his screenplay for the next planned sequel, Dune: Messiah. He also teases audiences will see more emotion from Zendaya’s character in the threequel.
Speaking with the New York Times, Villeneuve confirmed he’s actively working on the script for Messiah as the movie continues to take the right steps towards coming to fruition. While Villeneuve keeps Messiah‘s story details close to the chase, the Dune franchise helmer hints that moviegoers will see more of the raw emotion Zendaya’s character, Chani, showed at the end of Part Two. “That anger [felt by Zendaya’s character at the end of Part Two] is tremendous. I don’t want to reveal what I’m going to do with the third movie. I know exactly what to do. I’m writing it right now. But there’s a lot of firepower there, and I’m very excited about that decision,” he said.
Villeneuve previously mentioned Dunefans should expect an expanded role for Zendaya’s rebellious Fremen warrior character in Messiah, praising her performance in Part Two and insisting her showing is one of the reasons he’s excited about making the threequel. The ending of Part Two sees Chani feeling betrayed by Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he spearheads his holy war, leaving an interesting cliffhanger that Messiah looks certain to build on.
Messiah Would Cap Off a Planned Trilogy
Villeneuve has teased Messiah for a long time, with the threequel adapting Frank Herbert’s eponymous book. Though he’s finishing the screenplay for Messiah, Villeneuve insists there’s no rush on his part to bring the third installment to the big screen, wanting to tell a more profound story than the first two films. Legendary Entertainment recently offered an exciting update on Messiah as they and Villeneuve ramp up development on the film.
Messiah‘s development comes as Part Two enjoys strong critical and commercial success. Boasting a 95% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the follow-up to the original Oscar-winning Dune has grossed over $686 million worldwide since its Mar. 1 premiere, making it the top-performing box-office title of the year and one of the 10 highest-earning IMAX films ever.
Part Two features a star-studded cast also including Austin Butler, Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Dave Bautista. The film has been praised by some of Hollywood’s elite, including legendary directors James Cameron and Steven Spielberg.
