Truong My Lan, a top Vietnamese property tycoon and chair of major developer Van Thinh Phat, has been sentenced to d*ath in one of the biggest corruption cases in history, with estimated damages of $27 billion.
Lan was found guilty of embezzling $12.5 billion and setting up fake loan applications to withdraw money from Saigon
Commercial Bank (SCB), in which she owned a 90% stake.
“The defendant’s actions… eroded people’s trust in the leadership of the (Communist) Party and state,” read the verdict at the trial in southern business hub Ho Chi Minh City.
